Occupational Health and Safety
The Service Station Association’s Occupational Health and Safety services are designed to provide a comprehensive solution focused on measurable objectives. Our approach is to empower your company to manage its own health, safety and risk management strategies on an ongoing basis. In this way, the benefits are delivered directly to where they count most – your bottom line.
Key Services
The MTA has access to a team of highly qualified experts to work with your company to identify any deficiencies and, with the required combination of advice, consulting, expertise and training, can help you to implement cost-efficient and effective OHS and risk management solutions.
Strategic Planning
The MTA team will work with you to develop a strategic occupational health and safety plan customised to your company’s needs. In establishing your goals and objectives, the planning process involves analysis of current legislation, the review of current workplace practice and systems, policies and procedures, assessment of the skills and resources available, along with the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.
Safety Management Systems
Once a comprehensive strategic plan has been formalised, OH&S specialists will help to implement a solution that meets your company’s specific requirements. For businesses of every size, strategic plans can be integrated into any business system.
Safety Inspections & Audits
A visual site inspection or a comprehensive audit of the workplace, systems and practices provides a practical benchmark against current industry practices and legal requirements. MTA experts will identify any deficiencies that may need to be addressed and make recommendations to ensure practical and legal compliance.
Specific safety inspections are also available in the areas of:
- Hazardous substances
- Manual handling
- Workplace lighting
Prompt and Reliable Telephone Advice
Members can call for fast and accurate information, interpretation or advice on all issues of OH&S as well as other valuable advice. Advice on the legislation can help reduce the complexities of running a business. Access to the Advice Line is inclusive in the membership package and is available Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm. on 02 9016-9000.
Additionally, members can also access continually updated information on topical issues of OH&S through the MTA NSW website and/or by subscribing to ERIS (Employee Relations Information System).
Policy and Procedures
Drawing on our extensive experience, the SSA can provide assistance in drafting policies and procedures and preparing OH&S manuals and contractor safety management plans. This service may also include integration of OH&S procedures, competencies and accountabilities into other business procedures.
Accident and Incident Investigation
The MTA can assist you in identifying why accidents have occurred and how to instigate investigations to minimise the potential for these accidents or incidents to reoccur. One of the key elements in workplace safety is the identification and investigation of hazardous practices. Your attention to these issues is an important element in the overall control of what occurs in the working environment.
Rehabilitation and Workers Compensation
Expert advice in these areas can help minimise cost and reduce exposure to liability. In claims cases, the MTA can help you manage the processes from the time of the injury right through to the closing of the case including notification, claims management and representation in claims review meetings. The provision of qualified and expert assistance can potentially reduce the cost of your Workers Compensation premium by a significant amount.
Defence of WorkCover Prosecutions
Industrial legal specialists can provide defence services for service station operators being prosecuted by WorkCover, particularly after a company has had a major accident. The MTA is able to assist with an independent investigation to put you in a stronger position to defend charges which may be brought by WorkCover.
Training
The SSA in conjunction with MTA NSW can identify training needs and develop and implement an ongoing training program for employees and managers. The Occupational Health and Safety training services include:
- Rehabilitation co-ordinator training
- OHS Safety Committee training
- Manual handling
- Worksite inspections
- Risk management and hazard control
