In recent times the courts have brought to our attention examples of fraudulent activity that has occurred in the automotive industry. Please refer to the following example: An unsuspecting consumer sold a vehicle privately for a fair price and handing over the vehicle, the consumer received what is a fraudulent bank cheque from what was created possibly with false identification.

NSW Government has thrown its support behind the Waste Motive initiative nominating Ingrid Marsh (Director Industry Development, Trade, Tourism, Investment and Precincts) to be a task force representative and Suzanne Pierce (Director Policy Science & Research – Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer) to observe the progress of the initiative.

Members will have heard that the Queensland Government has announced further restrictions on people movement into and out of the state of Queensland, to assist in the prevention of the spreading of Covid-19 virus. These new measures commence at 12midnight this evening the 25th March, 2020. It is important that Members appreciate that exceptions to these rules apply to the normal operation of their businesses. As you would be aware, the Federal Government recently announced an economic stimulus package in response to the current Coronavirus situation. This assistance is designed to support businesses to manage cash flow and help businesses retain their employees and are specifically designed to support small and medium businesses. Small businesses will also receive a wage subsidy for apprentices and trainees to help retain a skilled workforce.

As you would be aware, MTA NSW has been lobbying and working with the NSW Government since mid-2018 to introduce improvements to our Industry. This was done through the Better Business Reforms package (BBR) and the announcement of the statutory review for the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act 2013.

On Friday 21 February 2020, Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee joined Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey in Nambucca to announce a new initiative to help apprentices in bushfire and drought-affected areas.
