MTA NSW Advocacy in Action: Driving Economic Reform for Automotive
As part of our strong advocacy on behalf of members, MTA NSW recently lodged a formal submission to the Australian Treasury for its Economic Reform Roundtable consultation. This consultation forms part of a broader national discussion led by the Treasurer to shape Australia’s economic future and although the Roundtable is by invitation only, our industry’s voice is being heard.
Australia’s economic resilience relies heavily on the essential work of the automotive industry; from maintaining fleets and servicing vehicles to training the next generation of tradespeople. Our submission highlights how our sector can help lift national productivity if given the right policy support.
Key Focus Areas from MTA NSW's Submission
Workforce & Skills Reform
- Address critical skills shortages and stagnating apprentice numbers
- Advocate for modernised, flexible training models suited to small businesses.
- Reinstate apprenticeship incentives and expand funding for not-for-profit RTOs.
National Occupational Licensing
- Push for a consistent, national licensing framework across states to improve public safety and workforce mobility
- Elevate training standards and recognise increasing EV-related risks.
Small Business & EV Transition Support
- Call for tax rebates and increased instant asset write-offs for workshops investing in EV equipment and training.
- Recognise the cost pressures of new technology on small repairers.
Industrial Relations Simplification
- Advocate for harmonised federal and state IR laws to reduce red tape.
- Propose a ‘one-in, one-out’ approach to streamline regulation.
In Conclusion
As the peak body representing NSW’s automotive industry, MTA NSW continues to advocate strongly on behalf of our members.
Our submission underscores that genuine, long-term productivity gains come not only from big business but also from enabling small businesses and trades-based industries to thrive. We look forward to continuing to work with the government to unlock the full productivity potential of our sector.
